Dr. Cooper is a very respected thoracic surgeon at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, having graduated as a medical student from Harvard Medical School back in 1964. He was a fellow at the same university and started his medical career at the University of Toronto in 1972. Dr. Joel Cooper is well known for being the first to successfully perform a lung transplant, and later, the first successful double lung transplant. These successful firsts paved the way for increased survivability among lung cancer patients, including those affected by mesothelioma. Dr. Joel Cooper has been the recipient of many awards and honors, most linked to the lung transplants he pioneered.
