Extrapleural Pneumonectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove the lung affected by cancer and part of the pleura, pericardium, the diaphragm and the nearby lymph nodes. The surgery is a treatment option only for patients diagnosed with early stages of pleural mesothelioma. The overall health of the patients also plays an important role, taking into account that the removal of a lung will put pressure on the heart and the other lung. It can be used together with other treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
