The most independent and the largest amongst the only 8 mesothelioma cancer centers of the world offering the proton beam radiotherapy to the mesothelioma cancer patients, had a grand opening in Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute (HUPTI) situated in Virginia. Proton beam therapy is said to be one of the most effective ways of treatment to irradiate the tumors in the lung cancer and mesothelioma patients.
Mesothelioma, a cancer occurs in individuals who are exposed to airborne asbestos fibers and is resistant to many of the prevailing standard cancer treatments. According to Swedish research group, for an effective mesothelioma treatment, proton therapy is very useful as it is suitable to deliver precise drug dosage to the lung tissues and thus facilitate a high tumor dose. Also the treated patients have nil to minimal side-effects.
A mesothelioma has a complex growth pattern, where the tumors are close to other organs, thus limiting the mesothelioma doctors, as they are unable to successfully give high dose radiation treatment. Proton beam has the ability to target within millimeter accuracy deep-seated tumors with good precision and destroy them while sparing the surrounding healthy tissues. HUPTI will treat patients suffering from brain, breast, prostate, lungs and other cancers.
HUPTI will also be the first state-of-the-art research and training proton center in the country that would provide training for proton-specific medical career.
