Mesothelioma Treatment Adjuvant: Sirolimus

Mesothelioma is known to be a rare form of cancer, which is linked to long term asbestos exposure.

Asbestos is a natural mineral that was widely used in the construction work for his specific proprieties, but is also known as a potential deadly carcinogenic.Researchers in mesothelioma cancer have established that exposure to asbestos, inhalation of asbestos fibers or swallowing asbestos fibers, is the main cause for developing malignant mesothelioma cancer.

Sirolimus Studies

Boston Women’s Hospital has developed a research work for mesothelioma, using an immunosuppressant drug called Sirolimus. They have tested side effects of this drug in clinical trials with mesothelioma patients.

Results shown that Sirolimus is a mesothelioma drug that really helps treating this type of cancer.

The research team at Birigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, claimed that they saw greater success when using Sirolimus with Cisplatin then they did when using only Cisplatin.

Sirolimus is now a drug used in treating different types of cancer including mesothelioma cancer.

Sirolimus function is to act as an inhibitor in the development of certain proteins that affects the growth of the cells, and stops cancer cell spread in to other internal organs.

It is now known that Sirolimus will be used for mesothelioma patients, including in their treatment Sirolimus and Cisplatin also, for best results.
“Sirolimus appears to enhance the cytotoxicity of cisplatin in malignant pleural mesothelioma cell lines trough the mammalian target of rapamycin pathway”, researchers at the Boston Women’s Hospital said.

Future implications

They also talked about the basis for the clinical evaluation, which is provided by the results of this research work, a combination between Sirolimus and Cisplatin chemotherapy in treating malignant mesothelioma cancer.

Now that Sirolimus is officially known to be an important drug in healing mesothelioma cancer and also for other types of cancer, it can be used in clinicals for each cancer patient who is manifesting mesothelioma symptoms.
