In a report in the Journal of Medical cases an article was published which quoted the survival of Australian woman in a mesothelioma case. Mesothelioma is a fatal cancer who has an average life expectancy of 18 months after its diagnosis but this lady has survived more than seven years and is still going on in a healthy way.
The Australian woman started experiencing fatigue, abdominal pain and a bad taste in her mouth at the age of forty, she consulted her physician. After the CT scan it was confirmed that the tumor in her abdominal was a form of mesothelioma called peritoneal mesothelioma. A surgery was conducted in which the tumors from her bowel, colon and diaphragm were removed which was followed by a chemo bath in which a warm chemotherapy solution was used to soak the tissues of affected area, her response to these treatments was good and finally she was considered cancer free.
Peritoneal mesothelioma is not a very common type of all three types, it is found in lining of abdominal cavities. The most common type of mesothelioma is pleural mesothelioma which is a type of cancer that develops in the lung lining. On an average mesothelioma affects 3000 people in America and 90000 worldwide each year. It is also termed as ‘orphan disease’, as it affects less than 200000 people at any given time. Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is formed due to inhalation of asbestos fibers. Asbestos is a fibrous material which lodges inside the human body on inhalation and remains there for very long time which leads to the development of tumor. The symptoms of this disease are coughing, wheezing and chest pain and it takes decades for these symptoms to show themselves.
According to doctors the Australian women survived this fatal cancer due to her high estrogen receptivity. In addition to this her body responded well to disease and the tumor had not spread a great deal.
