Dr. Joseph S. Friedberg is board certified in General Surgery and in Thoracic Surgery. He is an active member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the General Thoracic Club, the General Massachusetts Hospital Alumni Society, the Surgical Infection Society and of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Friedberg is now the Chief of the Thoracic Surgery and an Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Health System- Presbyterian Medical Center. He received his Medical Degree from the Harvard Medical School, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He completed his residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital for General Surgery and he also completed his fellowship in Thoracic Surgery at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

Moreover, he is the head of the PMC Thoracic Research Laboratory and head for many clinical trials.

Dr. Friedberg's medical interests include pleural cancer, malignant pleural mesothelioma, chest diseases and lung cancer, being also very interested in laser treatments, minimally invasive surgery, development of drugs for mesothelioma and other types of cancer. Every year since 2005, Dr. Friedberg is listed among the top doctors of metropolitan area of Philadelphia.

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs.
