Dr. Jai Raman is currently the medical director of cardiothoracic ICU at the University of Chicago Medical Center. He was also appointed the Chief Scientific Officer at Mardil Inc. (a medical device start-up company) and the professor of surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Chicago. He is a cardiothoracic surgeon and hence, has helped a lot of patients with mesothelioma due to his high level of experience. He has received board certification in cardiothoracic surgery in the form of FRACS.

He graduated from St. Johns Medical College in Bangalore, India with an MBBS which is equivalent to an MD in 1984. He followed this up with a MMed in 1993 from the University of Sydney, Sydney, Australia where he did a thesis in microsurgery. Then came FRACS (Fellow Royal Australasian College of Surgeons), Melbourne in 1997 wherein he dwelled deeper into cardiothoracic surgery and then finally he did a PhD in heart failure- ventricular containment from the University of Melbourne, Australia in 2003. During this period, he undertook a lot of postdoctoral training, cardiothoracic surgery residencies and fellowships in Australia itself.

Mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Cancer cells can also metastasize (spread) from their original site to other parts of the body. Most cases of mesothelioma begin in the pleura or peritoneum.
