Doctor Rice is born in Ireland, in Dublin to more exact. He attended the University of Dublin, School of Medicine, and Trinity College.
He completed his residency at The University of Texas, Anderson Cancer Center, as a chief resident at the Baylor College of Medicine, Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery Department. He also did a residency at the Mayo Clinic, General Surgery department in for 6 years starting 1992.
He also did the fellowship in Thoracic Surgery at Mayo Clinic for about 2 years and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Mayo Clinic.
His research fellowship was based on tumor immunology, examining ways of stimulating T-cell of the immune system to better fight the cancer.
He is also the Director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Department at the Anderson Cancer Center.
