Cisplatin and Alimta

 Mr.Nicholas Vogelzang, M.D., led the global Phase III clinical trial evaluating Alimta/cisplatin while director of the University of Chicago Cancer Research Center said that we tried a host of different drugs "throughout the 1970s, '80s and '90s. I personally was involved in many of these clinical trials and most of them had almost no effect on the cancer."

But Alimta/cisplatin really proved different.

• This particular drug regimen was mainly compared to cisplatin alone in a clinical trial of nearly 448 patients suffering from malignant pleural mesothelioma in 19 countries.
• It showed results that overall survival drastically increased to 30 percent.
• Approximately 50.3 percent of the malignant pleural mesothelioma patients treated with Alimta/cisplatin were alive a year.

These results were statistically much important. Mr. Claude Denham, M.D. a study co-investigator for U.S. Oncology and a medical oncologist with Texas Oncology in Dallas said that "For the first time in the history of medical we have proof that a chemotherapeutic regimen helps malignant pleural mesothelioma patients live longer, this it is a great deal.”
