It’s been 35 years since the Vermont Cancer Center was set up within the University of Vermont (UVM) College of Medicine. Today, the facility boasts staff strength of more than 120 scientists and physicians who are dedicatedly involved in research on the entire spectrum of basic, translational, and clinical fields related to cancer and issues closely linked to it.

The goal of Vermont Cancer Center is to ‘influence standards of cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis and care across Vermont and northern New York.’ Patient care areas include Hematology/Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Gynecologic Oncology, Dermatology, and the Cancer Patient Support Program. Also on the anvil are collaborations with Fletcher Allen Health Care on developing into a center that will serve to be a single point of access and care for patients with all types of cancer. The concept of the multi-disciplinary clinic (MDC) will comprise Breast Care Center MDC, Upper Gastrointestinal MDC, Lung MDC, and Melanoma (skin cancer) MDC and even a Mesothelioma MDC some day. The quest to uncover new knowledge and understanding about cancer remains uppermost and efforts span decades in the future.

This not-for-profit venture also acts upon its belief in information sharing and dissemination. The latest available information on cancer prevention and screening, diagnostics and treatment, advances in clinical and laboratory research, and issues of survivorship are periodically made available to the public, cancer providers, researchers, and health care experts. The means to do so are conferences, academic lectures, professional meetings and symposia which are hosted regularly.

Questions & Answers

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Cancer cells can also metastasize (spread) from their original site to other parts of the body. Most cases of mesothelioma begin in the pleura or peritoneum.
