Seven states around and including Tennessee are famously known as the “cancer belt” since the region has the highest death rates from cancer. The fight, therefore, is intense but the spirit is high. Confidence derives from the understanding that the competition is not with other cancer hospitals but with the disease itself. Only by making concerted joint efforts can the battle be won. Also, while all cancer types and patients of all ages are treated at Vanderbilt, it is well-known that each patient is unique and requires the skills and experience of a comprehensive team of cancer specialists for diagnosis and to develop the right treatment plan.
