The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) is the epicenter for cancer patients in western Pennsylvania. Set up in 1984, it epitomizes the fight with cancer in its new lifesaving approaches for cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment; and in its efforts to inspire future generations of scientists and clinicians to pick up the baton where the veterans leave off.

UPCI has more than 625 research faculty members on its rolls, including leaders in molecular and medical oncology, who are marked by their broad strategic vision and all-inclusive approach to understanding and defeating cancer. They specialize in a spectrum of cancer-related disciplines such as cancer prevention, early detection, novel therapeutic discovery, survivorship issues, and palliative care for those nearing the end. Nearly $200 million in research grants were awarded in 2007 taking UPCI to 11th position nationally in funding from the National Cancer Institute.

The professed aims of the cancer center are to enhance understanding of cancer development and progression, to aid in improved cancer detection and diagnosis, to develop novel therapeutics for cure, and to work towards effective cancer prevention. To these ends, we find basic researchers working in tandem with clinician scientists to make available to patients the latest treatments. Also available to patients is the chance to contribute to these efforts by participating in novel clinical trials at UPCI and UPMC Cancer Centers. All these efforts ensure that UPCI continues to grow and evolve in its quest to beat the odds against cancer.

Questions & Answers

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Cancer cells can also metastasize (spread) from their original site to other parts of the body. Most cases of mesothelioma begin in the pleura or peritoneum.
