The University of New Mexico Cancer Center is one of the 40 most pre-eminent cancer research and treatment centers in the United States, including internationally known centers. This accreditation is obtained on the basis of “outstanding cancer research focused on translating discoveries into better cancer treatments and tools for cancer diagnosis and prevention; that provide outstanding, state of the art cancer care to their patients; and that reach out to their regional communities to form partnerships for cancer education and prevention.”

The above-mentioned mandate is borne out by the fact that 35 percent of the adult population and 100 percent of the children in New Mexico suffering from cancer according to the records of over 70,000 ambulatory clinic visits were treated at the UNM Cancer Center in 2005. This was made possible only because the UNM Cancer Center provides the largest team of cancer specialists in New Mexico, including 52 cancer physicians and 90 cancer research scientists. The Center has an impressive cancer research funding of nearly $40 million that feed more than 180 cancer clinical trials testing new treatments. The NCI supports its cancer programs with over $8 million dollars in federal grants.

The UNM Cancer Center endeavors to serve the most needy individuals of society, along with all other cancer patients, with a level of dedication that considers all citizens of New Mexico deserving of the best. The micro vision encompasses reduction in the incidence and mortality rate related to cancer in the home state, and the macro vision aims at enhancing the world's understanding of cancer.

Questions & Answers

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Cancer cells can also metastasize (spread) from their original site to other parts of the body. Most cases of mesothelioma begin in the pleura or peritoneum.
