“The conquest of cancer through innovation and collaboration” is the professed aim of the National Cancer Institute-certified University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. It found a place on the list of only 40 U.S. centers to be thus accredited owing to the following factors:
The Center is also one of the founding members of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. In this role, it helps develop national guidelines to ensure consistent, high-quality and cost-effective cancer care across the country along with 21 other premiere cancer centers. A multi-disciplinary, team approach is followed to address the individual needs of this complex disease and to ensure early and complete diagnosis. Each type of cancer is handled by a team specializing in that form, and 14 different multidisciplinary cancer clinics at the University of Michigan work tirelessly to eradicate cancer.
The Patient and Family Support Services needs special mention in its efforts to heal the whole person, not just the disease. Some patients need particular care in management of side effects and troubling symptoms that jar with daily life. Highly trained genetic counselors are also available for those with cancer in the family.

Mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Cancer cells can also metastasize (spread) from their original site to other parts of the body. Most cases of mesothelioma begin in the pleura or peritoneum.
