The National Jewish Medical and Research Center was built in 1899, in Denver, to serve the big number of tuberculosis patients at that time. Formerly, the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine was dedicated to people suffering from tuberculosis. The hospital was working in collaboration with the Denver Sheltering home, to provide special medical treatments for patients with respiratory diseases. At that time, no other institution offered support for tuberculosis patients.

In 1989 this two institutes, National Jewish Center and Denver Sheltering, merged, and now it represents the biggest medical center in the U.S. for treatment and study of chronic respiratory diseases like: asthma, emphysema, tuberculosis, chronic bronchitis, interstitial lung disease, mesothelioma cancer, lupus and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

It is very important to know that the National Jewish Center uses a LUNGLINE dedicated to people who have questions about respiratory disorders and about the treatment of these diseases. The medical and research center is also developing studies and provides information trough the LUNGLINE for: sarcoidosis, smoking, asbestosis, lung diseases and cystic fibrosis.

This medical center is one of the best center in the U.S. and provides special care and novel treatments for all types of patients with respiratory disorders including mesothelioma and lung cancer.

Questions & Answers

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Cancer cells can also metastasize (spread) from their original site to other parts of the body. Most cases of mesothelioma begin in the pleura or peritoneum.
