The Cancer Research Center of Hawai‘i in downtown Honolulu is a part of the University of Hawai‘i (UH). It was established as a freestanding independent institute in 1981 by the Board of Regents. In 1996, the Center received the Cancer Center Support Grant and became an NCI-designated center. As of today, the Cancer Research Center of Hawai‘I has become a meeting ground for researchers whose mission in life is to further the understanding of the etiology of cancer and to mitigate the dreaded impact on the people of Hawai‘i.
The means of achieving the above-stated goal is through on-going research, continued education and unstinted service rooted in and taking into account the ethnic, cultural, and environmental diversity of the region. The Center actively manages three research programs in Epidemiology, Natural Products and Cancer Biology, and Prevention and Control. A fourth program on Thoracic Oncology is on the anvil. Support for these programs comes from nine state-of-the-art Shared Resources and a broad Education and Training mission and four Partnership and Outreach projects take this cutting-edge research to the local health care and research communities.
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) funds a Minority-Based Community Clinical Oncology Program (MBCCOP). The Clinical Trials Unit of the CRCH is a part of MBCCOP. Cancer patients and individuals at risk of cancer are encouraged to take part in these clinical trials through community based cancer centers, community hospitals and physician offices. All data management for the clinical trials is done by experienced clinical research associates.

Mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Cancer cells can also metastasize (spread) from their original site to other parts of the body. Most cases of mesothelioma begin in the pleura or peritoneum.
