Grady Health System opened in 1892, and it set up the first cancer care facility in the state, The Georgia Cancer Center for Excellence (GCCE). GCCE is a $28 million state-of-the-art facility, also home to the $3.3 million Avon Foundation Breast Health Center. It is dedicated to cancer patients and their families and affords them quality care and support services, including cancer prevention and screening, treatment, research and education.
Working on a multidisciplinary approach, GCCE has put together a team of professionals such as surgeons, oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, nurses, home health professionals, radiation therapists, dieticians, rehabilitation therapists, pathologists, hospice representatives, as well as chaplains and community education and outreach coordinators. As an internationally recognized teaching hospital, Grady is staffed by doctors from Emory University and Morehouse schools of medicine.
Patients receive personalized and compassionate care and also the advantage of ongoing research. Scientists study cancer causes and treatments relentlessly in GCCE’s 10 research laboratories. Discussion between researchers, physicians and specialists facilitate discoveries that are translated into patient benefits. As a result, patients of so-far incurable diseases like pleural mesothelioma have much to hope for owing to institutions like Grady’s. Patients also have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials related to cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
Grady Health System takes the name of its founder, Henry W. Grady, editor of the "Atlanta Constitution." What started as a three story, 110-bed facility, is now considered one of the largest health systems in the United States serving the needs of Fulton and DeKalb counties.

Mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Cancer cells can also metastasize (spread) from their original site to other parts of the body. Most cases of mesothelioma begin in the pleura or peritoneum.
