The Birmingham VA Medical Center is situated in the southern district of the city. The facility specializes in providing acute tertiary medical care and surgical intervention to veterans of Alabama and surrounding states who are eligible according to the VA Southeast Network Veterans Integrated Service Network [VISN 7].

The medical center boasts a 313-bed acute care center with 136 operating beds at present. The population in the region uses it as a referral center that serves them well for a host of medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties. The facility is affiliated with the University of Alabama at Birmingham and most staff receives joint appointments from both institutions.
