The Arizona Cancer Center is a part of the University of Arizona's College of Medicine. Set up in 1976, it has established itself as a Center of Excellence in the Arizona Health Sciences Center. Since 1990, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) recognizes the Arizona Cancer Center as one of the first comprehensive cancer centers and one of only two such centers to serve the five-state region of Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah.

Arizona Cancer Center is dedicated to research that will reduce the existing mortality rate of cancer and this philosophy forms the core of the center, permeating into all they do, be it academia or patient care. In conformance to this creed, five scientific research programs function simultaneously:

  • Cancer Biology and Genetics
  • Cancer Imaging
  • Cancer Prevention and Control
  • Gastrointestinal Cancer
  • Therapeutic Development

Taken together, the five programs cover a breadth of issues that include translational and clinical research with a focus on new discovery and novel treatments. The infrastructure of the research programs derives from 13 shared services: Analytical Core; Behavioral Measurements; Informatics/Bioinformatics; Biometry; Imaging Core; Clinical Research; Experimental Mouse; Experimental Radiation; Flow Cytometry; Genomics; Proteomics; Synthetic Chemistry & Molecular Modeling; and Tissue Acquisition, Cell and Molecular Analysis. More than $70 million is allocated to research funding annually. A number of outpatient clinics function at the University Medical Center North Campus in Tucson. These are multi-disciplinary clinics with each one having a specific focus, such as Breast Cancer, Skin Cancer, Mesothelioma or some other. Conferences are regularly held to discuss better patient management.

Questions & Answers

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Cancer cells can also metastasize (spread) from their original site to other parts of the body. Most cases of mesothelioma begin in the pleura or peritoneum.
