Altru Cancer Center is dedicated to the care of cancer patients. It is part of the Altru Health System that is a charter member of the North Central Cancer Treatment Group (NCCTG) based at the Mayo Clinic. Located in Grand Forks, Altru Cancer Center takes pride in offering the most technologically advanced cancer treatment center in all of North Dakota.

Treatment revolves around a multidisciplinary approach where cancer specialists work in tandem with surgeons, radiologists, and pathologists to craft the most effective treatment for each patient. Also participating are dietitians, social workers, and oncology resource nurses.

Altru Cancer Center is the first to offer TomoTherapy to its patients; the advanced cancer treatment option uses a combination of technologies to deliver the most precise radiation treatment. The technologies include conventional linear accelerator, MegaVolt Computer Tomography, and advanced IMRT and IGRT to provide radiation in a unique helical (spiral) pattern. Angles up to 360 degrees are possible so that patient positioning does not impact the treatment. As a result, TomoTherapy is considered to be the best option for patients needing treatment in sensitive areas, like the spinal cord, brain and areas around the heart. In addition, as the tumor shrinks through treatment, the administration of the treatment plan is adjusted accordingly. The side effects are minimal as is the damage to healthy tissue.
